Threat Level Changes

Alaska Volcano Observatory
Okmok Volcano: Thursday, July 17, 2008 1:26 PM AKDT
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Okmok Volcano continues to erupt. Elevated seismic activity continues and has remained steady over the past 24 hours. Seismicity consists of nearly continuous volcanic tremor and occasional discreet events.

The most recent satellite imagery indicates little or no ash, however weather clouds may be obscuring an ash signal. A pilot report this morning indicates that ash is reaching 15,000 to 20,000 feet and drifting east/northeast.

The aviation color code for Okmok Volcano remains at ORANGE.

All areas in the immediate vicinity of the volcano on Umnak Island should be avoided, particularly the Crater Creek drainage northeast of the caldera. Ash fall may continue downwind of the volcano. Stronger explosive activity could resume at any time with little or no warning.

SECC continues to monitor this event.

Ashfall Advisory
The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued an ashfall advisory for the Eastern Aleutians including Unalaska and Nikolski. Ashfall advisory now in effect until 9 pm AKDT this evening for Umnak Island and far western Unalaska Island. Seismic activity and pilot reports continue to indicate that occasional low level volcanic ash emissions continue from Okmok Volcano, located about 65 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. Ash movement is to the east southeast. Very light ashfall will affect areas in the vicinity of Umnak Island and the far western portion of Unalaska Island.
