SITUATION REPORT 08-190 (as of 11:00 AM, July 8, 2008)

Earthquake
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located a moderate earthquake that occurred on Monday, July 7th at 2:43 PM AKDT in the Andreanof Islands region of Alaska. This earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 and was located at a depth of about 45 miles. This earthquake was felt in Adak.  No reports of this event causing damage have been received at this time. Distance to nearby locations: 24 miles SSW of Adak 435 miles E of Attu.

Flood Watches
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued flood watches for the following areas:
- The flood watch is now in effect for a portion of northern Alaska including the upper Tanana Valley and the Fortymile Country through this evening. Heavy rain fell in many areas from Dot Lake to Northway Sunday afternoon through this morning and more scattered showers are expected today. Northway has reported over 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Another 1/2 inch of rain is expected today in this same area. The Nebesna River at Northway has risen 2 feet since yesterday. Flooding of small streams and rivers in this area is possible through early Tuesday. Flooding is not expected on larger rivers such as the Tanana and Nebesna Rivers.
- Flood watch is now in effect through this evening from the Tok Cutoff east. Heavy rain fell in many areas from Dot Lake to Northway Sunday afternoon through this morning and more scattered showers are expected today. Northway has reported over 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Another 1/2 inch of rain is expected today in this same area. The Nebesna River at Northway has risen 2 feet since yesterday. Flooding of small streams and rivers in this area is possible through early Tuesday. Flooding is not expected on larger rivers such as the Tok, Chisana and Nebesna Rivers.

As of July 8, 2008, there have been a total of 288 fires reported with total acreage of 27,675.1.
