2008 Riverwatch Program
DHS&EM’s Riverwatch Lower Yukon Team continues to observe ice and river conditions, and follow breakup along the Lower Yukon River.  The River watch team’s aerial reconnaissance today will be from St. Mary's upriver to Marshall and down river to Alakunuk.  The Riverwatch Team will be providing local contact and VHF radio reports to the communities with potential to be affected by rising waters.

A copy of the yesterday’s SECC’s Riverwatch Situation Report is attached.  This report is updated daily at 4pm.

This program monitors the breakup of major rivers in Alaska and warns residents along those rivers of potential flooding from ice jams. The 2008 Spring Flood Breakup Guide is posted on our website at http://www.ak-prepared.com/

Flood Watch/Warning
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a flood watch now in effect through Wednesday afternoon for the Yukon River from Pilot Station to Mountain Village.  An ice breakup front has passed Mountain Village. Ice is still running well upstream and the ice may be sufficiently strong to cause a jam. Water levels at Mountain Village and Saint Marys would rise quickly if the ice jams.  Rapidly rising water levels can flood the low portions of Mountain Village and Saint Marys. Ice may also push into flooded sections of these villages.

Alaska Spring Breakup Summary
The NWS Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center in Anchorage publishes the spring breakup summary for Alaska. For detailed information and to see a flood potential map, breakup map, and other breakup information for Alaska refer to this web site at Http://aprfc.arh.noaa.gov.
