Juneau Avalanche
Yesterday, an avalanche in Juneau damaged the power transmission lines near the Snettisham hydroelectric plant, which accounts for 85 to 90 percent of the power supplied to Juneau.  The power company is now using diesel generators to provide power, which will significantly increase the electric rates for its customers.  At this time, there are no requests for assistance from the City and Borough of Juneau.  The power company is handling the outage using its own resources. DHS&EM operations contacted the Juneau City manager this morning to check on the status of the situation.  He states the power utility is operating on 3 generators with a fourth one as a backup.  The diesel fuel situation is not an issue at this time however they will be monitoring it closely.
