State of Alaska Situation
Wind Chill Warning
The National Weather Service Fairbanks has issued a wind chill warning for Northeastern Brooks Range including Anaktuvuk Pass, Atigun Pass, Galbraith Lake, Sagwon and Franklin Bluffs. Wind chill warning now in effect until 6 pm this afternoon for Brooks Range passes. Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph in Brooks Range passes will combine with temperatures of 25 to 35 below to produce wind chill as low as 60 below zero. In addition there will be areas of blowing snow.
A wind chill warning means dangerously low wind chill temperatures are expected. If you must be outdoors, be careful to cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite.
Blizzard Warning
The National Weather Service Anchorage has issued blizzard warning for Western Aleutians including the Cities of Shemya and Amchitka which is in effect from 1 am Wednesday to 4 am Thursday. A strong north pacific low will move across the Western Aleutians Thursday bringing strong winds in excess of 60 mph and snow late Tuesday night through late Wednesday night. The combination of these conditions will cause visibilities to be frequently reduced to one quarter mile or less. Look for conditions to improve Thursday morning as subsides slightly and snow changes to snow showers.
FEMA 1669-DR-AK (06 October Southern Alaska Storm)
APresidential Declaration of a major disaster for the State of Alaska was signed on December 8, 2006. Applicant briefings have been completed for Cordova, Valdez and Kenai Peninsula Borough. State Individual Assistance for 06 October Southern Alaska Storm is available to individuals and families in the Cordova, Glennallen, Valdez and Seward areas who suffered damages to real property (primary residence), personal property and transportation. U.S. Small Business Administration assistance is available in the Chugach REAA, Copper River REAA, and Kenai Peninsula Borough areas.
The application period to apply for State Disaster Assistance is November 27, 2006 to January 26, 2007. Persons wishing to apply should call 1-800-921-3682.
FEMA in Alaska for Federally-Declared Disasters
A FEMA Joint Field Office in Anchorage is in support of three federally-declared disasters: 06 Hooper Bay Fire (FEMA 1666-DR-AK), 06 August Southcentral Flooding (FEMA 1663-DR-AK) and 06 October Southern Alaska Storm (FEMA 1669-DR-AK).
National Situation
As of Monday, at least 3,002 members of the U.S. military had died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven Defense Department civilians. At least 2,397 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers. More...
International Situation
Government officials on Monday reported that 16,273 Iraqi civilians, soldiers and police died violent deaths in 2006, a figure larger than an independent Associated Press count for the year by more than 2,500. The tabulation by the Iraqi ministries of Health, Defense and Interior, showed that 14,298 civilians, 1,348 police and 627 soldiers were killed in the violence that raged in the country last year.
