State of Alaska Situation
Augustine Volcano
Current Level of Concern Color Code: Orange.  The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has provided the following report for today, Wednesday, February 8, 2006 11:30 AM AKST. Seismicity at Augustine remains at low-levels but is still above background. Low-level ash plumes and occasional pyroclastic flows on the island's flanks continue. Satellite data from last night show a persistent thermal signal and occasional light ash emission. A glow at the summit and upper north flanks was visible from Homer last night and early this morning with low-light cameras and high-powered binoculars. Dependent on weather and level of volcanic activity, two field crews plan to visit the island today by helicopter and fixed wing aircraft to observe thermal features, measure gas release, collect ash samples, make visual observations of new deposits, and download imagery from a still camera. Further explosive activity producing ash clouds to altitudes over 25,000 feet may still occur with little or no warning. AVO is monitoring the situation closely and the observatory is staffed 24/7. For up-to-date Ashfall Advisories and wind trajectories, please refer to the National Weather Service website: http://pafc.arh.noaa.gov/augustine.php.  The telephone recording on the Status of Alaska’s Volcanoes is (907) 786-7478.
