State of Alaska Situation
’06 October Southern Alaska Storm
On October 8, a strong storm caused severe flood damage on the southern areas of Alaska. State disaster assistance is available to individuals and families in the Cordova, Glennallen, Valdez and Seward areas who suffered damages to real property (primary residence), personal property and transportation during the October 2006 flooding. The application period to apply for State Disaster Assistance is November 27, 2006 to January 26, 2007. Persons wishing to apply should call 1-800-921-3682.
FEMA in Alaska for two Federally-Declared Disasters
FEMA team has set up a Joint Field Office in Anchorage in support of applicant briefings, kickoff meetings, and project worksheet development for two federally-declared disasters: 06 Hooper Bay Fire (FEMA 1666-DR-AK) and 06 August Southcentral Flooding (FEMA 1663-DR-AK).
National Situation
More than 1,200 people were arrested in meatpacking plants in six states during raids that federal officials said amounted to the largest-ever workplace crackdown on illegal immigration. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Wednesday the investigation uncovered a disturbing front in the war against illegal immigration, in which illegal immigrants are using the identities of U.S. citizens to obtain jobs. International Situation
Bomb blasts killed at least 23 people in Iraq on Wednesday, including seven Iraqi soldiers, in a day of apparently sectarian violence that overshadowed preparations for a conference intended to promote national reconciliation. In the worst blast, a car bomb exploded near a bus shelter and a crowd of Shiite day laborers in a busy street in eastern Baghdad, killing 10 people and wounding 25, the police said. More...

Significant Dates
December 13, 2001 – India: Attack on the Indian Parliament. Five gunmen attacked the Indian Parliament in New Delhi shortly after it had adjourned. Before security forces killed them, the attackers killed 6 security personnel and a gardener. Indian officials blamed Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and demanded that Pakistan crack down on it and on other Muslim separatist groups in Kashmir.
December 13, 1994 - Organization of the Islamic Conference adopts code of conduct for combating international terrorism. The code states terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances.
