State of Alaska Situation
Nov 2005 Southeast Storm
DHS&EM Governor’s Disaster Policy Cabinet will convene at 2PM this afternoon to discuss the November 2005 storm event fact sheet with recommendations to the Governor.
Earthquake
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located a light earthquake that occurred on Monday, December 19th at 9:06 PM AKST in the Andreanof Islands region of Alaska. This earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was located at a depth of about 22 miles. It was felt in Adak. No reports of damage have been received. Distance to nearby locations: 37 miles SSE of Adak and 448 miles WSW of Unalaska.
Winter Storm Warning
The National Weather Service Fairbanks continues the winter storm warning for St Lawrence Island and Bering Strait Coast. Northeast winds gusting to 60 mph will continue through 6 pm Wednesday. Blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero at times.
Volcano
Augustine Volcano: Elevated seismicity continues. No explosion-like signals like those seen in previous days have been recorded yesterday, 19 December. Web camera and satellite images of the volcano were obscured by clouds yesterday. There is no indication that a large eruption of Augustine is imminent. Small explosions can still occur with no warning and could affect low-flying aircraft in the vicinity of the volcano. Augustine remains in color code Yellow and AVO continues to monitor the situation closely.

National Situation
The continuing state crackdown on forged Connecticut driver's licenses has netted four more arrests. Karin Birch, 33, of in Stratford, who recently resigned from the Bridgeport DMV office, was charged with 86 counts of bribery, forgery and violations of the state Corrupt Organizations and Racketeering Act. Birch is the fourth employee of the Bridgeport DMV office accused of selling thousands of undocumented driver's licenses and identity cards to illegal aliens. More...

Chad says its armed forces have chased and killed 300 rebels who attacked a town near the border with Sudan. Rebels attacked the town of Adre, Africa on Sunday, Chad said, but troops pursued them into Sudan before pulling out. More...
Significant Dates
December 20, 2003 – Nepal: Maoists using automatic machine guns and motorcycles attack an army vehicle that was transporting cash of the state-owned Rastryiya Banijya Bank. Three soldiers were killed and one wounded in the attack.

December 20, 1989 – Panama: U.S. military forces intervened in Panama to protect the 35,000 Americans residing there and to install a democratically elected government. Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega surrendered to U.S. forces on January 3, 1990 after having taken refuge in the papal nunciature.
