State of Alaska Situation
Earthquake
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located a light earthquake that occurred on Friday, December 30th at 5:09 AM AKST in the central region of Alaska. This earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.5 and was located at a depth of about 80 miles. The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received and processed. It was felt in Anchorage however, no reports of this event causing damage have been received at this time. Distance to nearby locations: 25 miles SE of Kantishna and 88 miles E of Telida.

Volcano
Augustine Volcano:  Current Level of Concern Color Code: Yellow.
Seismicity at Augustine continues to be relatively low compared to previous weeks. However, small explosions can still occur with no warning and could affect low-flying aircraft in the vicinity of the volcano. Web camera and satellite views were cloudy yesterday. There is no indication that a large eruption of Augustine is imminent.

International Situation
Ten Sudanese refugees were killed and 20 injured when Egyptian riot police broke up their three-month protest outside United Nations offices in Cairo today, Egypt's Interior Ministry said.

Eleven members of a single Shiite family had their throats slit in an attack south of Baghdad that illustrates the size of the task awaiting political leaders trying to sketch out plans for a grand coalition government. In another development, the International Mission for Iraqi Elections (IMIE) announced it was sending assessors to Iraq to help investigate complaints of fraud in the December 15 general elections. The latest overtly sectarian attack took place in a house in the largely Sunni district of Latifiyya around 20 kilometers south of the capital known as the triangle of death, police said.

Long lines formed at gas stations in Baghdad on Friday as word spread that Iraq's largest oil refinery had shut down in the face of threats against truck drivers, and fears grew of a gas shortage. Also in the capital, a suicide car bomber and a mortar killed six people and injured 23 people in separate attacks Friday, police said. The car bomber blew himself up next to a police patrol in a commercial area, killing three Iraqi civilians, and the mortar landed in a market, killing three Iraqi civilians and injuring 21. The market was closed because of the Friday holiday.

Significant Dates

December 30, 2000 – Philippines: Series of bombs in Metro Manila kills 16 and injures at least 30; Abu Sayyaf suspected. A bomb exploded in a plaza across the street from the U.S. Embassy in Manila, injuring nine persons. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front was likely responsible.

December 30, 1999 – Lebanon: Hizballah suicide bomb attack wounds 12 civilians, 2 Israeli soldiers.
