Deadline Approaching to File for Individual Assistance Program Disaster Relief
(Anchorage, AK) – Individuals and families who suffered damages and/or losses to personal and real property during the Bering Strait Sea Storm Disaster that hit the west coast of Alaska in October 2004 have until January 29, 2005, to apply for assistance through the State Individual Assistance Program. The affected areas include the Northwest Arctic Borough, the City of Nome, the Bering Strait Regional Education Attendance Area (REAA), the Lower Yukon REAA, the Lower Kuskokwim REAA, the Kashunamiut REAA, and the Pribilof Islands REAA.
“Individuals and families who incurred damages or losses during the October disaster may be eligible for State assistance through this program,” said Jamie Littrell, DHS&EM spokesman. “If an individual or family does qualify, they could receive a maximum of $5,000 for property repairs or replacement of lost items.”
To apply for the State Individual Assistance Program, call 1-800-921-3682 anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
National Situation
U.S. officials want to see if the same technology that speeds cars through highway tolls and identifies lost pets can unclog border crossings without compromising security. The British government Wednesday proposed sweeping new powers to control suspected terrorists, including electronic tagging, curfews and house arrest of people who have not been convicted of crimes. Home Secretary Charles Clarke said the new control orders would apply to both foreigners and British nationals, and he promised to introduce legislation as soon as possible. Eleven foreigners who have been held without charge as suspected terrorists for three years will not be released until the new powers were in place, he added. More...
France's counterterrorism agency detained another four people Wednesday, expanding an investigation of a network suspected of funneling French Islamic militants to Iraq, authorities said. The latest arrests raised the number of people in custody to 10, judicial officials said. The justice minister suggested the roundup, which started Monday in the Paris region, was timed to allow France's domestic counterterrorism agency, known as the DST, to gather better information.
