SITUATION REPORT 04-360 (as of 11:00 AM December 25, 2004)

State of Alaska Situation
Winter Storm Warnings
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued the following:

Western Arctic Coast including Wainwright, Atqasuk, Point Lay and Cape Lisburne. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 pm today west of Point Lay. South winds 40 to 60 mph and blizzard conditions will continue through this afternoon.

Northwestern Brooks Range including Singiluk and Umiat. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 pm this evening for the passes. Through the passes, south winds gusting to 60 mph will produce local blizzard conditions with blowing and falling snow reducing visibility to near zero.

Northeastern Brooks Range including Anaktuvuk Pass, Atigun Pass, Galbraith Lake, Sagwon and Franklin Bluffs. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 5am Sunday for the passes. Through the passes, south winds gusting from 40 to 60 mph will produce local blizzard conditions with blowing and falling snow reducing visibility to near zero.

Southeastern Brooks Range including Arctic Village, Wiseman, Coldfoot, Chandalar, D.O.T. Camp and Iniakuk Lake. Winter storm warning is in effect from 4 pm this afternoon to 6 pm Sunday from the Dalton Highway westward. Snow will develop this afternoon and continue into Sunday. Storm totals up to 6 inches are likely in some areas from the Dalton Highway westward through Sunday.

Upper Koyukuk Valley including Allakaket, Hughes, Bettles, Caribou Mountain, and Gobblers Knob. Winter storm warning is in effect 4 pm this afternoon through 6 pm Sunday. Snow will develop this afternoon and continue into Sunday. Storm totals up to 6 inches are likely before the snow tapers off Sunday. Above tree line, west winds will increase to 40 mph tonight with blizzard conditions developing in snow and blowing snow. Snow and winds will diminish somewhat on Sunday.

A storm that is now bringing strong winds and blizzard conditions to the west coast of Alaska will move east tonight and Sunday bringing heavy snow to the southern slopes of the Brooks Range.

St Lawrence Island and Bering Strait Coast including Gambell, Savoonga, Brevig Mission, Teller, Wales and Diomede. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 4pm this afternoon for the Bering Strait Coast. South winds to 60 mph and blizzard conditions continue on the Bering Strait Coast this afternoon.

Chukchi Sea Coast including, Point Hope, Shishmaref, Kivalina and Espenberg. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 pm tonight, Southeast winds gusting 50 to 70 mph along with blizzard conditions will continue today. The winds and blizzard conditions will decrease late tonight.

Lower Kobuk and Noatak Valleys including Noatak, Kiana and Red Dog Mine. Winter storm warning is in effect until to 5 am Sunday. Strong winds and blizzard conditions will continue until late tonight. These conditions will diminish by Sunday morning.

Baldwin Peninsula and Selawik Valley and the Northern and Interior Seward Peninsula including Kotzebue, Selawik, Noorvik, Buckland, Deering, Candle, Council, Haycock, Pilgrim Springs, Serpentine Hot Springs and Taylor. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 pm tonight. Winds gusting to 60 mph and blizzard conditions at times will diminish late tonight.

Southern Seward Peninsula Coast including, Nome, White Mountain and Golovin. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 6pm tonight. Southeast winds to 50 mph and blizzard conditions will diminish late this afternoon.

Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills including Unalakleet, Stebbins, St Michael, Elim, Koyuk, and Shaktoolik. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 pm tonight. Southeast winds to 50 mph and local blizzard conditions will diminish late tonight.  

Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys including, Ambler, Shungnak and Kobuk. Winter storm warning remains in effect until 5 am Sunday. Heavy snow and local blizzard conditions will develop this afternoon. The snow will taper off Sunday morning with a total of 6 to 12 inches of new snow. The local blizzard conditions should end by Sunday morning.

High Wind Warning
The National Weather Service in Anchorage continues high wind warning for Southeast Prince William Sound including Cordova. Continue high wind warning through this afternoon for the Copper River Delta. North wind 35 to 50 mph gusting to 80 mph through the Copper River Delta decreasing during the afternoon. Considerable blowing and drifting of local roadways can be expected through this afternoon with conditions improving this evening for the region.

Travel Advisory
The department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Maintenance and Operations has reopen Parks Highway at/or near Cantwell.  The Parks Highway has reopen at 6PM on December 24. Use caution, reduce speeds, watch for equipment working in the area.
