State of Alaska Situation
Unalaska Island - M/V Selendang Ayu Oil Spill
On 7 December 2004, the Coast Guard notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) that the M/V Selendang Ayu had lost engine power and was adrift. The vessel grounded on December 8 and broke into two pieces. The vessel had 424,000 gallons of bunker C (IFO380 Intermediate fuel oil) and 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. The amount of product spilled is unknown. The M/V Selendang Ayu remains grounded in two pieces approximately 1800 yards offshore of Cape Spray. Resources at risk in the area include marine mammals, sea birds, shellfish and anadromous streams. ADF&G and USF&WS are assessing the areas impacted. The protection of cultural resources is a high priority for the Unified Command. Earthquake
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located a moderate earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, December 21st at 8:21AM AK Standard Time in the Prince William Sound region of Alaska. This earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 and was located at a depth of about 1 mile. This event was felt in Anchorage and Valdez. No reports of this event causing damage have been received at this time. Distance to nearby locations: 30 miles NNE of Chenega Bay and 69 miles ENE of Seward.
Blizzard Warning
Blizzard warning through tonight for the Pribilof Islands including Saint Paul. A strong weather front associated with a low south of the central Aleutians is slowly moving through the eastern and central Bering Sea today. Expect snow and blowing snow with reduced visibilities through Tuesday night with northeast winds gusting to 65 mph in some locations.
Heavy Snow Warning
The National Weather Service in Anchorage has upgraded the winter storm watch for the Susitna Valley to a heavy snow warning tonight through Wednesday. Snowfall amounts expected by Wednesday afternoon will range from 16 to 36 inches with the bulk of that expected tonight. Snow will begin to spread north today through the Susitna Valley but significant snowfall amounts are not expected until tonight. Snow will continue into Wednesday but taper off and change to rain south of Talkeetna in the afternoon.

Calendar of Significant Events
December 21, 1988 - United Kingdom, United States: Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Pan Am Flight 103, outbound from London for New York with 259 people aboard, was destroyed by a bomb on December 21, 1988 while over Lockerbie, Scotland. All aboard the aircraft were killed as were eleven persons on the ground at Lockerbie.
December 21, 1975 – Austria: Attack on OPEC Conference.
Pro-Palestinian guerrillas attacked an OPEC conference in Vienna, killing three people, wounding seven, and taking eighty-one hostage. Forty-one Austrian hostages were released in Vienna, while the rest were taken to Algeria and released on December 23, 1975.
