State of Alaska Situation
Unalaska Island - M/V Selendang Ayu Oil Spill
On 7 December 2004, the Coast Guard notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) that the M/V Selendang Ayu had lost engine power and was adrift. The vessel grounded on December 8 and broke into two pieces. The vessel had 424,000 gallons of bunker C (IFO380 Intermediate fuel oil) and 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. The amount of product spilled is unknown. The M/V Selendang Ayu remains grounded in two pieces approximately 1800 yards offshore of Cape Spray. Bering Strait Sea Storm Update
The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) intends to continue Public Assistance Operations in the affected area after the holidays. Four PA Teams are being formed to work with local government and other eligible organizations. Current plans in draft form now, envision the teams conducting operations from the airline hub communities of Anchorage, Bethel and St. Marys from January 3 to January 21, 2005, or until such time as Preliminary Damage Assessment is complete. Preliminary Damage Assessment information will be used to further develop Project Worksheets that establish the scope of work to be done in assisting communities with recovery from this event.
Disaster assistance is being offered by the State of Alaska for individuals and families in the Northwest Arctic Borough, the city of Nome, the city of Mekoryuk, the Bering Strait REAA, the Lower Yukon REAA, the Kashunamiut REAA and the Pribilof Islands REAA who suffered damages to real and personal property during the October 18-24 storm. The 60-day application period started December 1, 2004 and will end January 29, 2005. DHS&EM is distributing fliers to be posted in the affected communities. Information that was previously gathered on DHS&EM Damage Assessment Forms from these communities was used only to support a disaster declaration and should not be considered as an application for individual assistance. All persons wanting to participate in this individual assistance program need to

Winter Storm Warnings
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for the following areas:
- Western Arctic Coast – for today for areas north of Icy Cape
- Central Beaufort Sea Coast including Nuiqsut, Prudhoe Bay, Alpine, Deadhorse and Kuparuk – for today
High Wind Warnings
The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings for the following areas:
- Eastern Aleutians including Unalaska and Nikolski – for late tonight through Monday night
- Central Aleutians including Atka and Adak – for tonight through Tuesday
