State of Alaska Situation
Unalaska Island - M/V Selendang Ayu Oil Spill
On 7 December 2004, the Coast Guard notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) that the M/V Selendang Ayu had lost engine power and was adrift. The vessel grounded on December 8 and broke into two pieces. The vessel had 424,000 gallons of bunker C (IFO380 Intermediate fuel oil) and 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. The amount of product spilled is unknown. The M/V Selendang Ayu remains grounded in two pieces approximately 1800 yards offshore of Cape Spray. Bering Strait Sea Storm Update
Disaster assistance is being offered by the State of Alaska for individuals and families in the Northwest Arctic Borough, the city of Nome, the city of Mekoryuk, the Bering Strait REAA, the Lower Yukon REAA, the Kashunamiut REAA and the Pribilof Islands REAA who suffered damages to real and personal property during the October 18-24 storm. The 60-day application period started December 1, 2004 and will end January 29, 2005. The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) is distributing fliers to be posted in the affected communities. Information that was previously gathered on DHS&EM Damage Assessment Forms from these communities was used only to support a disaster declaration and should not be considered as an application for individual assistance. All persons wanting
to participate in this individual assistance program need to call the toll-free tele-registration number, 1-800-921-3682. For a copy of the flier, contact the State Emergency Coordination Center at 1-888-462-7100.
Water Shortage - Nunam Iqua
The saltwater contamination in the source water for the Nunam Iqua water plant has dropped enough to be useable again. The water plant started pumping operations, and has filled the treatment tank. The loop to the storage tank was frozen and water plant operators are still working today to thaw the loop to allow filling of the storage tank.
Winter Storm Warnings
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for the following areas:
- St Lawrence Island and Bering Strait Coast including Gambell, Savoonga, Brevig Mission, Teller, Wales and Diomede - for today
- Upper Koyukuk Valley including Allakaket, Hughes, Bettles, Caribou Mountain and Gobblers Knob - for higher terrain today
- Central Interior including Nenana, Anderson, Tanana, Minto, Manley Hot Springs, Rampart, Lake Minchumina and Livengood - for today.
High Wind Warnings
The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings for the following areas:
- Taiya Inlet and Klondike Highway including Skagway - for this evening
- Glacier Bay including Gustavus - for today
- Eastern Chichagof Island including Hoonah - for today
- Salisbury Sound to Cape Fairweather Coastal Area including Elfin Cove and Pelican - through today
- Cape Decision to Salisbury Sound Coastal Area including Sitka and Port Alexander - through today
- Juneau Borough and Northern Admiralty Island including Juneau - for today

Harrods department store in London was bombed on December 16, 1983 by the northern Ireland terrorist organization Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA). The bombing killed five, including one U.S. citizen, and injured ninety-one others.
