SITUATION REPORT 04-039 (as of 11:00 AM February 8, 2004)

State of Alaska Situation
Blizzard and High Wind Warnings
Blizzard warning for Southern Seward Peninsula Coast including Nome, White Mountain, and Golovin.  Snow and blowing snow now developing at Golovin will spread west to Nome this afternoon.  As snow increases tonight, the blizzard conditions will become widespread with visibility near zero in snow and blowing snow. Wind speeds will decrease gradually to ease the blizzard threat.

Yukon Delta including Emmonak, Mountain Village, Alakanuk, Kotlik, Pilot Station, St Marys, Scammon Bay, Nunam Iqua and Pitkas Point.  Northeast winds 40 to 50 mph combined with blowing snow will produce near zero visibilities in blizzard conditions today. Wind chills will be down to 25 below.

High wind warning for higher elevations and Turnagain Arm through the afternoon for the Anchorage, Eagle River, Indian, and Eklutna. Wind gusts have picked up once again along the higher elevations with gusts being reported up to 75 mph. These winds are anticipated to diminish slowly this afternoon. Sustained winds will be in the 25 to 40 mph range through the day.

High wind warning changed to a blizzard warning over the hills today for the Upper Koyukuk Valley, including Allakaket, Hughes, Bettles, Caribou Mountain, and Gobblers Knob.  Snow developing by late morning will combine with strong east winds to produce blizzard conditions over hills from late this morning through this evening. This includes the Dalton Highway from Finger Mountain to Prospect Creek. Wind chills will be as cold as 45 below. Conditions should improve tonight.

High wind warning in effect today for the Southeastern Brooks Range including, Arctic Village, Wiseman, Coldfoot, Chandalar, D.O.T. Camp and Iniakuk Lake.  East wind speeds will increase to 15 to 30 mph with local gust to 50 mph by this afternoon.  The winds will decrease tonight. Wind chills will decrease tonight as low as 55 below.  

High wind warning in effect today for Denali and Eastern Alaska Range, including Healy, Denali National Park, Carlo Creek, Kantishna, Black Rapids, Donnelly Dome, Trims Camp, Eagle Trail and Mineral Lake. South winds gusting 50 to 60 mph in passes will continue today. The winds will decrease tonight.  

Winter storm warning continues through this morning for the Kuskokwim Delta including Bethel, Hooper Bay and Nunivak Island. Northeast winds 30 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph along the coast will result in blowing snow through the morning. Visibilities will be reduced to less than one quarter miles at times, mainly along the coast. Conditions will improve late this morning and afternoon as winds diminish.

High wind warning in effect today for St Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait Coast including Gambell, Savoonga, Brevig Mission, Teller, Wales and Diomede. Northeast winds will increase speed to 35 to 50 mph. There will be gusts as high as 65 mph.

High wind warning in effect today for Chukchi Sea Coast including Point Hope, Shishmaref, Kivalina, and Espenberg. Northeast winds will increase speed to reach 30 to 45 mph during the day today. There will be gusts as high to 60 mph near Bering Strait and Kivalina.

High wind warning in effect today for the Lower Kobuk and Noatak Valleys, Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys including Noatak, Kiana, Red Dog Mine, Ambler, Shungnak, Kobuk. Northeast winds will increase speed to reach 30 to 40 mph during the day today. Winds will gust frequently to 60 mph through the passes and down valleys. Winds will be especially strong in the Noatak Valley. The winds will diminish gradually tonight to ease the high wind danger.

High wind warning in effect today for Northern and Interior Seward Peninsula including, Buckland, Deering, Candle, Council, Haycock, Pilgrim Springs, Serpentine Hot Springs, Taylor.  North winds will increase to 40 to 60 mph this morning. The strongest winds will be through passes.
