SITUATION REPORT 03-322 (as of 11:00 AM November 18, 2003)

State of Alaska Situation
Earthquakes
A series of earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging up to 5.8, have occured in the Rat Islands reagion of Alaska over the last 2 days.  These appear to be aftershocks to the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occured in the same area on Sunday night.  There have been no reports of damage or injuries from any of these events.

Military installations are at FPCON A in Alaska. There is no specific threat to the State or its infrastructure.

National Situation
·       U.S. prosecutors have begun to push for the death penalty in the case of convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad. Prosecutor Richard Conway said the sniper lacked "a shred of remorse" after Muhammad was convicted of murder, terrorism, conspiracy and a firearms charge on Monday. More...

·       U.S. President George W. Bush is aboard Air Force One en route to London, where police are on alert over purported terrorist threats and thousands of demonstrators plan to protest his state visit. More...

·       The FBI has launched a new background-check system that notifies counterterrorism agents when suspects on its terrorist watch list attempt to buy guns, but regulations prohibit those officials from obtaining details if the transaction occurs. More...

International Situation
·       Alarmed by threats purportedly made by the al-Qaeda terrorist network to attack U.S. allies, the Japanese government has issued an alert for citizens traveling or living abroad. More...

·       As funerals were held of some of the victims of Saturday's synagogue bombings in Turkey, the country's foreign minister says the attacks were carried out by two Turkish suicide bombers and Turkish al-Qaeda sympathizers. More...

·       Spanish police arrested 12 suspected leaders of the armed Basque separatist group ETA today in what officials called a significant blow to the outlawed group's "basic structure." More...
